Workers Killed in December 9, 2010 Al Solutions Chemical Plant Explosion
Three workers have been killed, and at least one worker was injured, when a chemical plant owned by Al Solutions Inc. exploded in New Cumberland, West Virginia exploded. One direct employee of Al Solutions, Inc. was badly burned, and ultimately died from his burn injuries. A contractor on the site also suffered burns.
Al Solutions in New Cumberland West Virginia develops additives for the aluminum industry. The workers were working with titanium powder, used as an alloy additive. The powder is packed into bricks and is highly flammable.
Because this event resulted in a worksite death, OSHA was called to the scene, and is investigating.
According to published reports, the two dead workers were brothers.
This is not the first deadly workplace accident which has occurred at the AL Solutions New Cumberland facility. In August 1995, a worker was killed and another injured in a workplace fire. In 2006, another worker was killed in an explosion.
Work injuries, workers compensation claims, and other workplace tragedies can be avoided if workplace safety measures are taken. Industry never wants to implement safety programs, because they cost money. Al Solutions is obviously an unsafe workplace which should probably be shut down until the safety issues at that facility can be fixed.
