In February, the FDA informed the medical community that manufacturers of metoclopramide, a drug used to remedy gastrointestinal disorders, would be required to add a warning to their drug labels about the potential dangers of its long-term or high-dose treatment.
The label advises customers that use of metoclopramide has been linked to tardive dyskinesia, which may cause a variety of involuntary movements, speech issues, and tremors even after a patient is no longer taking the drug.
These issues are rarely reversible and there is no known treatment.
